THE HISTORY OF VETIVER AND THE FOUNDATION OF THE VETIVER NETWORK INTERNATIONAL

A brief history of Vetiver

Native to India, Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides is a fast growing perennial grass that is now grown in all tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Vetiver is known worldwide for its myriad of uses, of which its original and most well known is the sweet earthy fragrance of its roots, which have served as a natural perfume for centuries. This use of Vetiver oil assisted in the expansion of Vetiver grass across the globe, however this property is not the most significant use and application of Vetiver.

Vetiver grass was first used for erosion control and bank and channel stabilisation in Southern India, a practice that also extended to parts of the Caribbean and Mauritius. Through extensive research and development, beginning in the 1980s, this process of using Vetiver grass for erosion control expanded to address a multitude of industrial, rehabilitation and environmental protection needs.

Introduction to the Vetiver System

Research and development of Vetiver grass applications for soil and water conservation began with the application of Vetiver grass under World Bank finance projects in India in the 1980s. This use was the modern day catalyst that helped lead to the creation of the Vetiver System. With the increased awareness of the potential of Vetiver grass, research into the properties of Vetiver grass was undertaken in other countries. This continued research allowed for in depth analysis and understanding of how Vetiver grass works, which uncovered a vast array of uses that extended beyond the traditional and led to the development of practical guidelines for its application and the subsequent creation of the Vetiver System.

The Vetiver System provides active and expanding solutions with a capacity to address problems affecting soil, water and land. Extensive scientific research and successful case studies have been conducted worldwide, verifying the Vetiver System as a technical tool for soil bioengineering and the phytoremediation of contaminated land and water. A unique technology, the holistic nature of Vetiver grass lends the same characteristic to the Vetiver System, often allowing it to address multiple needs in a single application.

The mastery of the Vetiver System can be applied for the protection of communities and their roads, bridges, dams, railways, buildings, ports, riverbanks and levees. To control sedimentation of water bodies, rehabilitate and regenerate land and water, stop soil loss, increase and conserve soil moisture, protect soil fertility, increase productivity of reforestation, sustain hill slope agriculture, protect agricultural lands and infrastructure, reduce pollution from agrochemicals and pesticides, protect water supplies, clean polluted waters, decrease water-borne diseases, treat wastewater and sewage, mitigate industrial and mining pollution, and more!

The History of The Vetiver Network International

The history and development of the Vetiver System is interlinked with the history and creation of the TVNI itself. In fact, the Vetiver System is the result of the endless research, application, development and work of the co-creators and members of The Vetiver Network International.

The TVNI was born out of the desire and necessity to continue Vetiver work when the World Bank decided to redirect their focus and ended their Vetiver related projects. So in 1995, with the aspiration to expand on their successful Vetiver endeavours, the TVNI was created.

TVNI was created as an international resource to continue and support the international application, research and development of Vetiver Grass Technology, with the purpose of addressing infrastructure investment, agricultural productivity and protection, and socially sound development needs. Through the formation of The Vetiver Network International, the members expanded the accessibility and awareness of this sustainable and affordable technology and introduced the VS as an effective ecological tool with the capacity to address the growing number of environmental and developmental challenges facing the world today.
